After Joel Coen made his solo directorial debut with ‘Macbeth’, Ethan is now preparing a comedy inspired by Russ Meyer productions
Now, yes. The separation of the Coen brothers seems definitive. After Joel Coen made his debut as a solo director, without any intervention from his brother, with ‘Macbeth’ where Ethan was not involved in the production or the script, now it is Ethan who announces that he is also preparing a solo film .
When Joel premiered ‘Macbeth’ it was said that Ethan had lost interest in cinema. Evidently, he lied to us like scoundrels. The Coen brothers, geniuses with titles like ‘Fargo’, ‘The Big Lebowski’ or ‘No Country for Old Men’, have ended their collaboration, and the state of relations between the two remains to be clarified.
The film that Ethan Coen is preparing is announced as a sexual comedy inspired by Russ Meyer, the American filmmaker specializing in voluptuous women with huge breasts who is already a cult filmmaker.
Focus Features and Working Title are the production companies behind Ethan to develop this film, still untitled, that the filmmaker wrote in 2000 with his wife, Tricia Cooke. So the idea was for the film to be directed by Allison Anders, a director who had triumphed in the indie sphere with ‘Service Area’, back in 1992. The project never got a title (it doesn’t have one today either, waiting for materialize), but the script was so striking that names like Selma Blair, Holly Hunter, Christina Applegate or Chloë Sevigny were considered as protagonists.
It is known that that script by Ethan Coen and Tricia Cooke wrote more than 20 years ago, it was a road movie starring lesbians whose greatest reference was Russ Meyer, the famous ‘sexploitation’ director of the 70s, with hundreds of films to his credit characterized by low budget, eroticism and hilarious humor, including those considered today as cult myths such as ‘Vixen’, ‘Supervixens’, ‘Up’ or ‘Beyond the valley of the ultravixens’. In the early 1980s, Russ Meyer (March 1922 – September 2004) was a well-known filmmaker in Spain, since some of his titles had commercial premieres among us, and there was no festival that did not offer a retrospective of his filmography, with Meyer present to the delight of the spectators.
Ethan Coen’s project is moved by the most incorrect sexual humor. Trying to describe him in 2007, the filmmaker noted that “his sensibility of his is that of an exploit, but with a greater innocence.” In general, this “sex comedy” tells how a party girl travels from Philadelphia to Miami with a half-drunk friend, running into a thousand and one adventures.
It is known that a severed head, a bitter ex-girlfriend, a mysterious briefcase and an evil senator will be elements present in the film The film is still in a very early stage of production, but it is surprising that, after separating after shooting ‘The Ballad of Buster Scruggs’ in 2018, a film they made for Netflix, Joel, the “serious” brother has adapted Shakespeare while Ethan, the “funny” brother prefers to pay homage to Russ Meyer.
