The video taken by a man who was the victim of a crime in San Pedro del Pinatar in 2019 confirms that he did not try to attack his wife
Esteban Patricio lost his life, but at least he managed to save his good name. At around two in the afternoon on March 21, 2019, Sofía R., 28, of Ecuadorian nationality, telephoned 112 and reported that she had just stabbed her husband in the neck, in the course of a strong marital quarrel. She explained that he had attacked her, trying to hit her, for which she had had to defend herself, with that tragic result. A version that who knows if it would have served him to avoid prison, but that would undoubtedly have earned him more than a show of understanding and even solidarity.
The problem was that Esteban had recorded the entire incident, and even his own death. Seeking to protect himself from a possible accusation of gender violence – she repeated that she was going to report him for having drugged her – the man activated the camera on his mobile phone. And so he recorded not only the discussion, but even the final struggle with which he tries to snatch the knife from her so that she does not injure herself, and the way in which, once mortally wounded in the carotid, he ends up collapsing, inert, on the kitchen floor. Sofía was aware that this recording stood between her alibi about the mistreatment and the truth and that is why she began to beat it with the device, before the arrival of the Civil Guard, until it was completely useless.
It was later, when being questioned in court, when the woman changed her version – surely well advised by her lawyer -, given the realization that destroying the mobile did not guarantee that the recording was impossible to rescue. So she ended up stating that the fatal prick occurred accidentally, while she was holding the knife and struggling with her husband.
“I have to record to show that I am not doing anything to you,” said the man when his wife urged him to turn off the mobile camera
Two minutes and 16 seconds
For two and a half years, the Court of First Instance and Instruction number 4 of San Javier, which assumed the investigation of this crime, has been waiting for the specialists of the Criminalistics laboratory of the Civil Guard to send it the Results of the analysis of Esteban’s phone: a Huawei L09, from which they have finally managed to extract the video that collects the sequence of the event. A document to which THE TRUTH has had access and that out of respect for the protagonists and their families will not be disseminated.
Throughout its two minutes and sixteen seconds, the images capture Esteban’s attempt to leave the house and his wife’s efforts to retain him at all costs. This is the full transcript of the recording.

Everything in its place
This evidence, which has been vehemently claimed by Sofía’s defense attorney, Melecio Castaño, may curiously play in favor of the accused. And it is that it allows to verify that the stabbing in the neck occurs during an intense struggle between the couple, without the images allowing us to reject that the wound did not have an accidental origin. And although it is also true that it leaves open the possibility that the stabbing was intentional, malicious and therefore homicidal, what seems to be excluded is the option that it was a surprise, treacherous and treacherous attack, in which the victim did not he would have had the least chance of defending himself. So it seems difficult that the assassination hypothesis can be successfully sustained.
At the same time, it offers satisfaction to what became the last wish of the deceased: that no one could freely accuse him of being an abuser. Esteban never raised his hand against his wife that afternoon. On the contrary; he died while trying to prevent her from hurting herself. While pretending to save her from herself.
Castaño: “There is basis to maintain that the event was accidental”
The criminal lawyer Melecio Castaño, who leads the defense of Sofía Elizabeth RB, positively valued the content of the video, since in his opinion “it makes it possible to completely rule out the murder” and opens the way for an accidental stabbing. “There is basis to defend that it was a reckless homicide, that she had no intention of causing his death,” he insisted.
