The Swedish firm Essity inaugurates this Friday the new line to produce adult diapers in its factory in Puigpelat (Tarragona). The company, responsible for brands such as Colhogar and Tena, has invested 24 million euros in this capacity expansion, which will allow it to produce up to 150 million diapers per year.
According to the organization, the new line will produce for the Tena and Orly’s brands and will supply the Spanish, French, Italian and Portuguese markets. In total, will develop 23 different references, with different sizes and levels of absorption. A solution to deal with incontinence which, according to the brand, affects 6 million people in Spain; 2 million of them chronically. The new division will generate 20 direct jobs and another 20 indirect jobs, according to its calculations.
Essity estimates the investment undertaken in the Tarragona plant since 2019 at 100 million euros. Both to expand its capacity and to improve its operations. Five million, for example, have been allocated to initiatives to reduce the energy bill.
The organization’s plan is to maintain this path throughout the year 2025 with two new production lines: one dedicated to feminine hygiene products and another intended for the production of jumbo – very large – tissue paper.
Essity’s footprint in Spain
Beyond the center of Puigpelat, Essity has two other factories in Allo (Navarra) and Telde (Canary Islands). In 2021, it also inaugurated a logistics and planning hub for its entire supply chain in which 200 people work.
In Spain since 1976, when it landed in Tarragona through the purchase of a local company, the Spanish subsidiary of Essity recorded sales of 700 million in 2023.
