Essay | My mother was only 57 when I noticed that her memory wasn’t working as it should – It started a battle that couldn’t be won

The mother of journalist Virve Rissanen contracted Alzheimer’s disease ten years ago. Years have taught me how to show grief and what will eventually remain in the person of the sick person.

Yoghurt and muesli ready on a plate, coffee dripping. Then the bedroom to lift out of bed brings an infinitely dear family member. From the diaper change together to the breakfast table.

This was perhaps sometimes my mother’s morning routine while she was taking care of me. A year ago, it was my routine when I took care of my mother.
