Erdogan says Netanyahu is “mainly responsible” for Iran’s attack on Israel

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday (16) blamed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for Iran's attack on Israel last weekend.

“Those mainly responsible for the tension that gripped our hearts on the night of April 13 are Netanyahu and his bloody administration,” said the Turkish leader, in a televised address.

“Those who remained silent for months about Israel's aggressive stance immediately condemned the Iranian response. But it is Netanyahu himself who must be condemned first,” said Erdogan.

On Saturday (13), Iran carried out an attack in response to a bombing (attributed to Israel) on the Iranian consulate in Syria that killed an important military leader of the Ayatollah regime in early April.

There were more than 300 Iranian drones and missiles, 99% of which would have been intercepted by Israel and allied forces, from countries such as the United States, United Kingdom and France. Despite the unprecedented attack and its scale, no one was killed and there were no serious injuries. Israel has promised that there will be a response, but it has not yet been defined how and when this will be.

Erdogan said the attack on the Iranian consulate in Damascus violated the rules of international law and “was the last straw.”

The Turkish president is disaffected by Netanyahu and compared the Israeli prime minister to Hitler and Israel's offensive in the Gaza Strip against the terrorist group Hamas to the Holocaust.

Last week, the Turkish government said it would restrict exports to Israel until there is a ceasefire in the war in Gaza, in addition to increasing the sending of humanitarian aid to the Palestinian enclave.

In response to this announcement, Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz stated that his department would prepare an “extensive list” of Turkish products to be banned from import by Israel and that he would also ask the United States and other allies to “stop investments in Turkey and prevent the import of products from Turkey.”
