Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, during a speech in the Parliament of Angola during a visit to this country, spoke out against the “handful” of the victorious countries in World War II, saying that the UN Security Council had no right to decide the fate of mankind. The recording of the speech was published on the official page of Erdogan on the social network. Facebook…
The Turkish leader called it inconceivable a state of affairs in which the architecture of global security remains the same, while the world is changing, and diplomacy, trade and international relations are undergoing radical transformations.
At the same time, the reluctance to heed the demands for change means “persistent attempts to maintain the status quo that emerged after the Second World War.” The Turkish President pointed out that “the world is more than five”, meaning the five permanent members of the UN Security Council.
In early October, Recep Tayyip Erdogan released a book entitled “A fairer world is possible.” In it, he focused on the problems of global politics, in particular on injustice, the migration crisis, international terrorism and Islamophobia, discrimination and double standards.
Among other things, the Turkish president in his work expressed the opinion that the UN Security Council, which includes Russia, the United States, China, Great Britain and France, should be fundamentally reformed. According to Erdogan, it is impossible to solve modern problems through institutions that are formed in accordance with the requirements of the past. Moreover, he pointed out, these institutions create new problems.
The French Foreign Ministry supported Erdogan’s proposal to reform the UN Security Council.
The ministry recalled that Paris has long supported the idea of expanding the Security Council and is in favor of expanding both categories of members – both permanent and non-permanent.
Back in 2016, Russia’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, Vladimir Safronkov, said that Russia did not rule out the option of reforming the UN Security Council, which would increase the number of permanent member states. According to him, Moscow is convinced that the reform formula “should enjoy the broadest possible support of the UN member states.”
At the same time, Safronkov added, whatever the result of the reform, Russia is in principle in favor of “expanding the representation of developing countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America in the Security Council.” Also, according to him, it is necessary to keep in mind a reasonable “ceiling” of the maximum number of the Security Council a little more than 20, “reasonable to maintain the effectiveness of its work.”
