In trade between Russia and Turkey it is possible to use the Russian ruble. This was reported on March 7 by the TV channel A Haber as a result of telephone conversations between Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin.
“President Erdogan said that Turkey and Russia can use the “dollar, euro, ruble, gold and yuan in trade,” the TV channel reports.
Telephone conversations between Putin and Erdogan took place on Sunday, March 6, and lasted about an hour. The topic of conversation mainly concerned the situation in Ukraine. The Presidents stated the importance of maintaining further contacts, including through the diplomatic and military departments of the two countries.
Earlier, on March 2, Turkey expressed its readiness to host talks between Russia and Ukraine in Istanbul. As the press secretary of the ruling Turkish Justice and Development Party (AKP) Omer Celik noted, since the beginning of Russia’s special operation in Donbass, the Turkish leader has been negotiating with all parties to the conflict in order to achieve a ceasefire.
At the end of February, Erdogan made a statement in support of the republic’s close dialogue with both Russia and Ukraine. He noted that Ankara wants peace and stability in all regions, including the Black Sea region. In addition, the Turkish leader expressed confidence that the country would be able to successfully overcome the Russian-Ukrainian crisis and would not compromise before any alliances.
In mid-February, due to the aggravation of the situation in the Donbass as a result of shelling by the Ukrainian military, the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics announced the evacuation of the civilian population to the Russian Federation and asked for recognition of independence.
On February 21, Vladimir Putin signed a corresponding decree. On February 24, he initiated the start of a special operation to protect the civilian population of Donbass. As the press secretary of the head of state Dmitry Peskov clarified, the special operation has two goals – the demilitarization and denazification of Ukraine. According to him, both of these aspects pose a threat to the Russian state and people.
