Equality|Helsinki Suomalainen Klubi decided that it will continue to be a men’s club.
Finnish Women are still not accepted as members of the club, STT is told.
This was decided by the minority of club members at Tuesday’s meeting.
The club held an extraordinary member’s meeting on the matter today, Tuesday. The vote on the rule change was organized because more than a tenth of the association’s members demanded it.
To change the rules, a three-quarters majority is needed, i.e. 75 percent of the votes. The Finnish Club has almost 3,000 members.
Women’s membership was voted on for the last time last December, and even then the minority of members was able to overturn the rule change. In that case, 67.6 percent of those who voted supported the motion.
The re-voting was organized quickly after the previous one, because some of the club members demanded it. The president was among those who demanded a re-vote Sauli Niinistö. According to the club’s rules, a vote must be held to change the rules if one-tenth of the membership demands it.

Shortly after its foundation, language conflicts in Finland intensified and the club became a political meeting place for promoters of the Finnish language.
