Equality | At least 50 people have already died in the protests against Iran’s mandatory headscarf

On Friday, the Oslo-based Iran Human Rights NGO (IHR) published a fresh estimate of the death toll.

At least 50 people have died in protests suppressed by Iranian security forces, which broke out after the arrest of the chastity police Mahsa Aminin after death. This is reported by the news agency AFP.

Iranian authorities said last Friday that 22-year-old Amin had died after being arrested for wearing a hijab incorrectly. Amin’s death quickly led to protests in which several people died, according to various human rights organizations.

The purpose of the demonstrations is to oppose the forced use of headscarves by women and the arbitrary actions of the chastity police.

in Oslo Iran Human Rights (IHR) said on Friday that the death toll has continued to rise after six people were killed in a firefight by security forces in the city of Rezvanshahr in northern Gilan province on Thursday evening. The rest of the reported deaths were recorded in the northern Iranian cities of Babol and Amol.

After the death of Mahsa Amin, there have been demonstrations in about 80 Iranian cities.

According to AFP, the protests that began in the aftermath of Amin’s death are among the most serious seen in Iran since November 2019.

Iran’s president Ebrahim Raisi told Finnish time on Thursday evening that Amin’s death is being “investigated”, but added that the cause of death investigation does not indicate the use of police violence. In addition, Raisi accused the demonstrators of causing chaos.

The Iranian government has tried to curb the enthusiasm of the protesters, for example by restricting Iranians’ access to the internet.

Amin’s death has also sparked protests outside Iran. Demonstrations were organized on Friday, for example, in front of the Iranian embassy in Brussels.
