A few days ago Epic presented a new demand against Google and Samsung in the Northern District of California for preventing access to third-party app stores on Android devices.
The court ruled in favor of Epic and ordered Google to restructure the Play Store to allow, for three full years, third-party app stores to access the entire app catalog.
Almost ten months after the same court ruled that Google has a monopoly on the Android application distribution market and in-app billing services, this victory comes for Epic Games and other companies.
Google is now required to allow third-party app stores to be publicly viewable within the Play Store and operate freely. With this, you will be able to download Epic’s own Games Store and other third-party stores directly from Google Play without problems.
The changes should be effective from November 1, 2024 and until November 1, 2027, for now it would be in the United States.
As of now, Google has eight months to create a system and a three-person technical committee chosen by Epic Games and Google to review any disputes.
More support for third-party stores from Google
With this triumph for Epic Games, Google must allow Android developers to inform users about other forms of payment from the Play Store. As well as letting Android developers include links to download their applications outside of the Play Store.
It will also allow Android developers to set their own prices for apps independently of Play Billing. Offer developers money or benefits so they don’t release their apps on rival stores; as well as offering device manufacturers or operators money or benefits to pre-install or not, the Play Store.
Of course Google will have control over Play Store security. So it will be able to “take reasonable measures” that are “strictly necessary and strictly tailored” and that are “comparable” to the way it currently controls the Google Play Store.
