Epic Games Store will welcome in its catalog i games based on blockchain technology and which provide for the presence of NFT and cryptocurrencies, according to the words of Tim Sweneey, the CEO of Epic Games. Statements that among other things come a few hours after Steam banned these titles from its store.
With a post on Twitter, Sweeney says that the aforementioned games will be able to enter the catalog of the store, as long as their authors meet certain conditions.
“Epic Games Store will welcome games using blockchain technology as long as they follow relevant laws, are transparent about conditions and are classified by age. While Epic doesn’t use cryptocurrencies in its games, innovations in technology and finance are welcome“Sweeney says on Twitter. In a statement sent to the editors of The Verge, the CEO of Epic Games adds that developers will not be able to use Epic’s payment services for cryptocurrency transactions.
The statements from the CEO of Epic Games come shortly after Valve changed its store guidelines, effectively banning blockchain-based games that use cryptocurrencies and NFTs from Steam.
In the past Sweeney had stated on Twitter that the company was not interested in using NFT so long as “as the whole industry is currently intricate, with an intractable mix of scams“, which might seem contrary to the new claims. In this regard the CEO explained on Twitter which makes a distinction between the games made by Epic Games itself and those of third parties present in the store, on which the company it does not want to impose decisions in the creative and technological fields.
“For the games we make, we aspire to use best practices. When serving other developers, we don’t try to impose creative or technical decisions. When a company gives itself such power, the temptation to abuse it pervades everything.“
