Epic Games has announced the reduction of its commissionsor royalties if you prefer, sui games developed using the Unreal Engine and launched immediately on the Epic Games Storemaking the use of its engine and store even more convenient for developers and publishers. So it will no longer take 5%, but 3.5% of revenues.
The conditions for obtaining the discount, already expressed, are that the games are developed with the Unreal Engine, which as you know is an Epic Games technology, and that they are launched on the Epic Games Store at the same time as their arrival in other stores, such as GOG, mobile stores and Steam.
Mobile competition
The initiative is called “Launch Everywhere with Epic” and will go into effect starting January 1, 2025. “It will apply to all platforms and stores where you offer your games, including consoles,” the studio explained.
Consider that Epic Games takes 5% commissions on all games developed using the Unreal Engine with a free license (which has no access costs), so this is good news for those who use it.
Of course, if the game is published on other PC and Android stores and not on the Epic Games Store, the commissions will remain 5%.
The move, which certainly favors developers, seems aimed not so much at competing with Steam, but rather at make the mobile Epic Games Store attractivewith which Sweeney’s studio wants to compete directly with Google and Apple.
Yesterday we learned that Epic Games is filing another legal complaint against Google and Samsung, arguing that the latter’s Auto Blocker is a hindrance to alternative app stores and clashes with a jury verdict from last year.
