Bandcamp joins the Epic Games ecosystem.
Bandcampthe “online record store and music community“, was acquired by Epic Gamesas part of what the developer of Fortnite and Unreal Engine calls his vision of building a “market ecosystem of creators“.
In a shared statement on Bandcamp’s blog, the co-founder and CEO Ethan Diamond he explained that the company will continue to operate as a standalone market and music community after the acquisition and will continue to serve as CEO.
“The products and services you depend on will go nowhere“wrote Diamond.”We will continue to build Bandcamp around our revenue model (where artists get an average of 82% of each sale), you will still have the same control over how you offer your music, Bandcamp Fridays will continue as planned and Daily will continue to put in highlights different and amazing music on the site“.
While Bandcamp users are unlikely to see any immediate changes after the acquisition, Diamond says the company will work with Epic to expand internationally and “carry on development“in all its services.
In a separate statement announcing the news, Epic said the two companies “share a mission to build the most artist-friendly platform that allows creators to keep most of their hard-earned cash“. He added: “Bandcamp will play an important role in Epic’s vision of building a market ecosystem for creators of content, technology, games, art, music and more“.
Bandcamp is the latest addition to a rapidly growing list of companies under the Epic Games umbrella. Since 2018, Epic, along with ArtStation and Sketchfab, has acquired Cloudgine, Quixel, SuperAwesome, Hyprsense, RAD Games Tools, Tonic Games Group – which includes Fall Guys developer Mediatonic and Fortitude Games – as well as Rocket League studio Psyonix and Rock.
