Coincidence or fate: The day that the little street dog Gorgi got lost in a police station was to change his life and that of the police officers fundamentally.

Bayamón/Puerto Rico – The little dog was starving, thirsty and injured when he strayed around the Bayamón police station on the coast of Puerto Rico one day. When police officers spotted the stray dog, they were surprised at how friendly he was – and that started an incredible story of unity and affection that Puerto Rico police wanted to share on Facebook and in the media.

“The dog was in poor condition, malnourished and with obvious signs of abuse,” Sergeant Jose Montesinos told pet magazine The Dodo and Puerto Rican news outlet Primera Hora. The police officers on duty didn’t hesitate for long and took care of the little dog. “He came up to us scared and looking for affection and protection,” the policeman describes the first meeting.

Then they gave him food and water, the little dog stayed for a while and finally left the police station. Officers were instantly in love with the stray’s species. Although he had gone through an obviously difficult time, he met them in a friendly and trusting manner. Her joy was correspondingly great when the stray was back in front of her station the next day.

Again, the officials took care of him – and played with him. This repeated a few times. “The dog started to be more confident, more playful and little by little he became part of the family,” José Montesinos tells Primera Hora. Soon the police officers decided to take the little dog off the street. They pooled money, had him checked out by a vet, vaccinated, showered him and even gave him a job.

As the police station’s official guard dog, Gorgi was even given a police vest and tag. Numerous people from the region also wanted to help the newly minted police dog and brought food and toys to the police station – a completely new life began for the little dog.

Since then, however, Gorgi has not only guarded the station, he is also there for the police officers, who repeatedly have to experience stressful and incriminating situations in their everyday work. Gorgi is a loyal companion and comforting friend. “He relieves tension,” said José Montesinos. The street dog has become part of the police family in Puerto Rico and is said to have everything he needs for as long as he lives. (iwe)
