The prices of solar panels are on the rise, but at least it hasn’t hurt the popularity yet. The price is affected, for example, by the deteriorating availability of materials.
Solar panels will be bought more this spring than before. The popularity has been growing in recent years, but the rise in electricity prices has taken demand to a new level.
“From the beginning of the year, many still waited a little and watched the development of the price of electricity. In March, we started noticing that this is the new normal, and the order volume exploded, ”says Lumme Energia’s Business Manager Joonas Kinnunen.
According to Kinnunen, so-called buying for ideological reasons has also become more common.
“When discussing the price with some customers, we don’t even talk about the price, it’s more about the customer wanting to produce the electricity from the renewable energy themselves,” Kinnunen says.
The war between Ukraine and Russia also has an impact, says the executive director of the Local Energy Union Tapio Tuomi.
“People want to protect themselves from uncertainties by increasing their self-sufficiency,” says Tuomi.
Lumme Energia preparing for a busier summer than usual. Business in the field of solar electricity is constantly growing, and the queues everywhere are at record highs every summer. According to Kinnunen, consumers should hurry if they want solar panels before the fall.
“Normally, our installation queue is from three weeks to a month, but at the moment the queue has to be more than two months,” says Kinnunen.
In addition to the global situation, the installation queues are congested due to the difficult winter weather. Kinnunen says that the installations planned for last December were delayed due to ice.
Solar electricity popularity has been on a fairly steady rise since 2016, according to a study by the Local Energy Association conducted in April 2022. According to Kinnunen, solar panels are cheaper than five years ago, but the price has started to rise again over the past year. So far, the rise in prices has not hampered demand, as the price of electricity is rising even more, says Tuomi.
According to Kinnunen, the rise in prices is affected by freight costs, growing demand and especially the availability of materials. Much of Europe’s solar panels come from China, but imports of solar panels will decrease in the future.
“There are enough panels for this year, but let’s see what the situation is next year,” Kinnunen says.
Sales The growth is also affected by the fact that many people buy solar panels a little more than they need, says Tuomi. Surplus electricity is now generating more revenue. The proliferation of electric cars is also playing a role.
“Many who buy solar panels have either just bought an electric car or are planning to buy one,” says Tuomi.
