Energy German, British and Dutch leaders oppose sudden ban on energy imports from Russia

The United States said on Sunday it was in “active talks” with European countries to end Russia’s oil imports.

GermanBritish and Dutch leaders warned on Monday to abruptly ban Russian energy imports because there are no immediate alternatives to imports, according to AFP news agency.

The countries expressed their opposition to the import ban after the United States said on Sunday that it was in “active talks” with European countries over ending Russia’s oil imports as a new economic consequence of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

“Europe has deliberately excluded energy supplies from Russia from sanctions, “said German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in its opinion.

“Europe’s energy supply to heat, transport, electricity and industry cannot be secured in any other way at present.”

Germany is heavily dependent on Russian fossil energy. An estimated 55 percent of its gas and 40 percent of its oil and coal come from Russia, according to AFP.

The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Boris Johnson again, he said in London that Russia’s exit from oil and gas was right, but that it needed to be done step by step.

He said we first need to make sure there is a replacement supply.

Prime Minister of the Netherlands Mark Rutte agreed at the same press conference that the energy transition “would take time.”

“The painful truth is that we are still very dependent on Russian gas and oil,” he said.

Russia’s exit from energy without ready-made alternatives could pose uncontrollable risks to European economies, Rutte warned.
