“I’ve supported him for a long time and I actually took care of him for two years of my life,” says Emilio, who like Javier is a comedian. ,,I went from a little brother to a big brother, and that pressure became too much for me. Taking that distance is okay, because I’m doing much better now.” According to him, a family member of an addict can only really help by not helping. “That is terribly difficult. An addict has to hit rock bottom.”
Emilio, also a comedian, says that too much has happened in his relationship with his brother. “I notice that I still struggle with it. He was one of the few who really understood me.” Javier has struggled with alcohol and cocaine addiction for years. He was admitted to rehab several times.
