An emigrant family wanted to build a new life in Portugal. But the headwind was too strong. Locals apparently stopped at nothing.

London – Portugal is considered paradise for many emigrants. Endless beaches, lots of sun and a relatively low cost of living tempt you. The Portuguese are also considered friendly, open and relaxed people. However, one British family had a completely different experience. Mysterious deaths of their pets and insults forced them to flee. Your story sounds incredible.

Cat stolen, dog killed: Emigrant families experience pure nightmare in Portugal

The family of four was convinced that they had found happiness in Portugal – in the Guarda region, just north of Lisbon. Lynn and Richard even decided to take part Channel 4 TV show “Our Wildest Dreams” to inspire others. But paradise turned into hell. The British emigrants were called “English pigs” by the locals and were ultimately driven away.

“I couldn’t take it anymore” – farm idyll in Portugal turns out to be hell

At first everything seemed perfect in the small, remote village and on their small farm. But then the tide turned. The couple claims their dog Cu died as a result of an attack. Her cats would have been kidnapped after her goat was poisoned. Serious allegations against the villagers. Apparently a local man admitted to the incident with the cats.

“I just couldn't take it anymore and that was my absolute lowest point,” Lynn told the British tabloid The Sun. The mother of two daughters was afraid of being alone in the house and therefore stayed in the largest city in the area. “It was so bad that I only went into the yard armed with a knife.”

Meanwhile, Lynn and her daughters are trying to regain their footing in England. Her husband Richard is still stuck in Portugal and has to organize the move. According to her, the nightmare in Portugal began in 2018, after the small TV report was broadcast.

Friends are raising money under 'Emergency escape back to the UK for Lynn and Richard' on the website GoFundMe. A sum of almost 4,800 British pounds (the equivalent of around 5,690 euros) has now been raised (as of April 17, 2024). The emigrant family is probably not the only one with this bad story. One Pensioner also experienced a nightmare in Portugal in the Algarve. Who only Holidays in Portugal should follow the beach rules know. Otherwise you could face hefty penalties, for example if you play loud music. (ml)
