First aid obstacle course for Italians. With ever longer waits. In 2023 the average length of stay stood at 31 hours, 25% more – 6 hours – compared to 2019. This is what emerges from the data from the Observatory of the Italian Society of Emergency Medicine – Urgency (Simeu), which will be presented on the occasion of the national congress of the scientific society, scheduled from May 30th to June 1st in Genoa. To describe the evolution of the sector, a survey was carried out on a significant sample of Italian emergency rooms by comparing the data relating to the year 2019 (pre-pandemic year, with approximately twenty million national accesses) with those relating to the year 2023 ( 18,000,000 accesses, Agenas data).
“The waiting time for hospitalization in the medical area – reiterates Salvatore Manca, past president of Simeu – has increased in just a few years by 25%: 6 hours more. That time has an absolute value that reflects the discomfort of the patients and the care commitment implemented in emergency rooms, which are increasingly short of tools to meet new needs. If we multiply the 31 hour time by the number of admissions to medicine in a year, a frightening figure emerges: tens of millions of hours of care. assistance and care on a stretcher”
