Elon Musk tweeted that Starlink, SpaceX’s satellite Internet service, has been approved in Nigeria and Mozambique. Starlink, based on a system of orbiting receptors launched into space by Musk’s company, currently operates in 30 different countries and is now making its debut in Africa with the aim of making it easier to standardize the Network on the continent. The African launch, particularly in Nigeria, has been in the works since 2021. Last May SpaceX sent representatives to the country’s government bodies to discuss the possibility of obtaining a license to operate in the country. The permit will last for a decade starting in May 2022, and will allow users to have a much faster Internet connection than the average currently offered by local providers. However, the service offered by Musk’s company is particularly expensive: the equivalent of 100 euros per month to navigate and 550 euros for the complete kit that includes the satellite receiver to be mounted outside the home, which become 460 euros per month and 2,300 euros for the kit if you want premium service at maximum speed. In Italy, where Starlink does not yet cover the whole territory, the starting price is 644 euros for the hardware and 99 euros per month for surfing.
