“Electric cars are the future of America“. The President of the United States said so Joe Biden, after a mutual pat on the back with General Motors CEO Mary Barra during the opening ceremony of the ZERO EV factory in Detroit. In a climate of great friendship, GM showed its electric cars, which could bring interesting news in terms of jobs and better respect for the environment. Biden, who is one who loves Corvettes, he appreciated, and argued that the great American auto group stands guiding the electrical transition.
There is a ‘but’ in this story. Between smiles and understandings on new forms of mobility, check the constant absence of Tesla, the manufacturer founded by Elon Musk. Although the brilliant entrepreneur cannot boast of the invention of the electric car (which has existed for over a century), he certainly contributed to reinventing it, with models that are on the crest of the wave. Tesla does not build endothermic cars and has created jobs in the States, so why ignore it? Musk now treats the subject exclusively with sarcasm. On Twitter he wrote: “Let’s see if I can get him to say the name Tesla“. It is not clear how the total absence of dialogue is possible, especially bearing in mind that Musk met in the past the last two presidents, Donald Trump and Barack Obama.
And in fact, neither Biden nor Vice President Kamala Harris have mentioned the manufacturer’s name in recent times when they talked about electric cars. General Motors, Ford and Stellantis (or Chrysler) have instead been regularly cited. “You have electrified the automotive industry“Biden told Mary Barra. Words that surely did not appeal to Musk, who on the contrary would like him to be recognized some leadership. After all, Tesla had not been invited to the summit on electric cars which took place earlier in 2021. Even Musk’s mother, Maye, provoked the President: “Biden’s speech for GM was written 20 years ago. The writer of the speeches uploaded the wrong file“. The reference is to the electric car EV1, developed by the American House and then abandoned.
Someone on Twitter suggested that Musk invite Biden to the opening ceremony of the new Gigafactory in Texas. And, in case of refusal, to put a hardcover of the President. The idea, it must be admitted, is not evil.
