Elon Musk joined Donald Trump’s call with Volodymyr Zelensky. As reported by Axios, the US president-elect’s phone call with the Ukrainian president included the surprise that Elon Musk was also online, which shows how influential Musk can be in the second Trump administration.
Trump’s public messages throughout the election campaign promising a quick resolution to the war in Ukraine, declining to say which side he was on, and criticizing the Biden administration’s aid packages to kyiv indicated, along with his obvious attunement to Russian President Vladimir Putin, who was not very in favor of continuing to send weapons to Ukraine.
But private conversations that Trump and his team have had with Zelensky and his advisers over the past two months, including on Wednesday, have been somewhat more reassuring for Ukrainians, according to sources consulted by Axios.
Zelensky himself considered that the fact that the call, which lasted about 25 minutes, took place shortly after Trump won the election was a positive sign. After Zelensky congratulated Trump, the president-elect said he will support Ukraine, but did not go into details.
According to Axios, Musk also intervened during the call to say that he will continue to support Ukraine through its Starlink satellites. Musk did not want to answer the media’s questions.
Starlink has been crucial to Ukraine’s war effort, although Musk has also mocked Zelensky’s calls for American help, with the Ukrainian president chiding the billionaire for talking about a peace plan in 2022.
According to sources mentioned by Axios, Trump told Zelensky that he would not abandon Ukraine, but that he wants to give diplomacy a chance. “I promise you that you will be happy with me,” Trump told Zelensky during that meeting. The Trump campaign also declined to comment on Wednesday’s call.
“I had a great call with President Trump and congratulated him on his historic landslide victory – his tremendous campaign made this result possible,” Zelensky wrote in X after Wednesday’s call.
Erdogan
Musk was also present when the call between Trump and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan occurred, explains Axios, who told reporters that Musk and Trump were having dinner together at the time.
“We had a candid conversation with Mr. Trump while he was at a family dinner (in which Elon Musk and a son of Musk were present),” Erdogan said of the Wednesday call, according to an official Turkish statement: “He had very nice things What to say about Türkiye in relation to the period ahead. We invite you to our country. I hope you accept.”
