Pornographic content had been appearing on social network X for months. Some users had noticed that explicit sexual images were being posted online without being deleted, in a change from Twitter’s policy before it was acquired by Elon Musk. Now, the South African-born tycoon will expressly and officially admit pornography on his social network, according to the latest update of his policies published by the social network. Both real and cartoon pornographic images and those generated by artificial intelligence will be admitted.
“You may share nudity or consensually produced and distributed adult sexual behavior, as long as it is appropriately labeled and not prominently displayed,” says the new content policy of the social network, which introduces small cautions in this regard. X’s policy contrasts with that of other social networks, such as Instagram and Facebook, owned by Meta, and TikTok and YouTube, owned by Google, which have sometimes been criticized for being excessively puritanical.
“We believe that users should be able to create, distribute and consume material related to sexual themes as long as it is produced and distributed consensually. Sexual expression, whether visual or written, can be a legitimate form of artistic expression. We believe in the autonomy of adults to participate and create content that reflects their own beliefs, desires and experiences, including those related to sexuality,” says Elon Musk’s social network.
According to the company, the way to “balance” the publication of pornography is to “restrict” exposure to adult content to children or adult users who choose not to view it. “We also prohibit content that encourages exploitation, lack of consent, objectification, sexualization or harm to minors, and obscene behavior.” The network will not allow adult content to be shared in highly visible places, such as profile photos.
Elon Musk’s social network expressly states that it will allow “adult nudity or sexual behavior that is pornographic or intended to provoke sexual arousal.” The new policy also applies to AI-generated, photographic or animated content, and cartoons, including hentai or anime. The new policy is as explicit as the content it opens the door to. Acceptable examples, it says, include depictions of full or partial nudity, including close-ups of genitals, buttocks or breasts; Explicit or implied sexual behavior or simulated acts such as sexual intercourse and other sexual acts.
The new policy asks those who regularly post adult content on X to adjust the settings so that their images and videos appear after a content warning that the user must accept before being able to view them. You can also add a single content warning to a specific post. But pornographic content can also be published without any warning, although X says that if it detects it, it will adjust the account settings so that it does include the warning in the future.
Users who have stated in their social network profile that they are under 18 years old or those who do not include a date of birth cannot click to see the marked content, although it follows that they will be able to see the unmarked content. The social network, in general, does not require any verification of the age of its users.
