Elon Musk, during his speech at the Viva Tech conference in France, explored the impact that artificial intelligence (AI) will have on the future of work and the lives of humans. The entrepreneur claimed that AI could perform all tasks better than us, forcing us to redefine the meaning of our existence.
Elon Musk’s speech at Viva Tech
Musk, known for leading Tesla and SpaceX, answered a series of questions on various futuristic topics, including Neuralink, travel to Mars and artificial intelligence. Speaking of the latter, Elon Musk shared a vision that seems straight out of a science fiction novel: a future in which no one will have a traditional job, but everyone will enjoy a high universal income and unlimited access to goods and services.
According to Musk, this positive scenario has an 80% chance of coming true. The real challenge, however, will be find new meaning in life when machines will be able to do everything better than us.
“In a world where computers and robots perform all tasks, what will be the meaning of our lives?” asked Elon Musk, inviting everyone to reflect on this question. He then elaborated a metaphor on the functioning of the human brain, comparing the interaction between the limbic system and the cerebral cortex to the possible role of AI in giving meaning to our existence.
The limbic system represents our instincts and feelings, while the cortex deals with thinking and planning. Elon Musk suggests that AI could act like the cortex, working to make our basic needs happy.
For those interested in exploring these topics further, Elon Musk recommends reading the Culture Cycle by Iain Banksa book series that offers an accurate vision of a future dominated by artificial super intelligence.
