Elly Schlein and the project of the new center left
Presenting “Our part” guest of Fabio Fazio at “Che tempo che fa”, Elly Schlein it went far beyond the editorial promotion and also the enunciation of principles that inevitably accompanies every book by a political exponent. In fact, the conviction continues to grow that this young activist – alone 36 years old – is a possible leader of the new center-left, a feminist and ecologist, who has been looking for an identity for some time. The vice president of Emilia Romagna called it “an appointment to discuss all together”, but many have read it as the first call of the new progressive area, determined to compact itself on the issues of the environment and social justice, with a more radical compared to the past. “Brave” she would define it, as the name of the list she helped with Stefano Bonaccini to reconquer Emilia Romagna, disputed by the League.
From #OccupyPD to Possible
“Many people are committed, and especially the new generations, to these issues. I limited myself to trying to weave the thread, I put at the disposal of politics a reasoning that seems to be missing “, said Schlein, in a clear attempt to broaden the field with respect to the work set by Enrico Letta within the Pd: “Le ‘Agora’ they are a space for participation also open to those like me who are not from the Democratic Party, not to bring together the political class, but the people: there have been some on the environment, on the work that today in Italy suffers a lot, which is increasingly poor , and to think about safety issues. We think of too many deaths at work like Lorenzo Parelli, it is unacceptable that we still have to die of work ”. Schlein in the Democratic Party was there from a very young age, the protagonist of a rather turbulent journey. Following the presidential election in 2013, which saw the sabotage of Romano Prodi and the controversial confirmation of Giorgio Napolitanothrew himself against the “Betrayal of the 101”launching the initiative #OccupyPDwhich through the physical occupation of some clubs wanted to express the opposition of the base towards maneuvers that had also led to the formation of the Government Letta, supported by the “broad agreements” which also involved large sections of the center-right. In December of the same year he adhered to the motion of Pippo Civatia candidate for the national secretariat of the Democratic Party and finished third, behind the winner Matteo Renzi it’s at Gianni Cuperlo. In 2014 she was elected to the European Parliament, but the year after her dissent towards the political line of her new secretary pushed her to leave the DEM to join “Possible”the new party founded by Civati.
From the European Parliament to the Emilia Romagna Region
Not reapplying for the 2019 European Championships, Elly Schlein remained without administrative roles for a while, also because she kindly declined the proposal to Beppe Sala to join the Milan council as councilor for environmental transition, a subject that is very close to her heart and that in the end the Milanese mayor decided to play on an interim basis. In 2020 she returned to the field for the regional elections in Emilia Romagna, the region where she grew up, contributing to the unexpected victory of Stefano Bonaccini versus Susanna Ceccardi, candidate of the center-right. In addition to the important support of the “Sardines”, President Dem managed to obtain a second term thanks to the support of the list “Emilia-Romagna Courageous Ecologist and Progressive”, formed by Articolo Uno, Sinistra Italiana, èViva and some local political-associative realities. Elected with the historical record of preferences in the history of the Emilia regionals (22,098), Schlein was appointed deputy of Bonaccini, as well as councilor for Welfare and the Climate Pact.
Its origins and its battles
Elly – at the registry office Elena Ethel – was born on May 4, 1985 from Melvin Schlein, American political scientist and academic of Ashkenazi Jewish origin. His ancestors came from the Austro-Hungarian Empire, which is now Ukraine, and upon their arrival in America they changed their surname, which was originally “Schleyen”. Elly was born in Lugano, because at that time her father taught science of politics and history at the local Franklin University. His mother Maria Paola Viviani she is full professor of comparative public law at the Faculty of Law of the University of Insubria, as well as nephew of the former socialist senator Agostino Viviani. In addition to the citizenship of Italy and the United States – where she volunteered for the two campaigns of Barack Obama – also owns the Swiss one. After graduating from a high school in Lugano, she studied law in Bologna, where she had moved with her family.
The ecological and social turning point
Admittedly bisexual, Elly Schlein also advocates using him Schwa, a symbol used to overcome feminine and masculine endings: “The challenge is cultural, the language is permeated with gender stereotypes that we also contrast by declining the professions to be feminine. I don’t understand the petitions against Schwa ”. With respect to the broader theme of inequalitiessays: “If they have increased and the Earth is on the brink of collapse it is not by chance, but the effect of precise choices. Different choices can be made, capable of reducing gaps and emissions, of improving life. of people and the planet? Can we unite the struggles for social and environmental justice, in the sign of intersectionality, around a shared vision: ecologist, progressive and feminist together. Indeed, it is not possible to fight effectively against inequalities if the climate emergency, which is its contributing cause and effect, is not tackled at the same time. And, conversely, it cannot be implemented a real ecological breakthrough without accompanying the entire society in it, starting from the most marginalized groups. “Words that the left had not felt for some time, at least so determined, and that the advent of a possible new leader could finally translate into reality.
