To say that electric cars are struggling to become popular in Italy is almost an understatement. The numbers bear witness to this in an exemplary way: in the first nine months of the year (and the script will almost certainly repeat itself at the end of 2022), our country was the only one of the main European markets to record a degrowth in the EV segment, with a contraction that came close to -24%. All this in a context of incentives that speaks of 280 million funds still unused: therefore the resources are there, the problem is that the electric at the moment does not have sufficient appeal in Italy.
The future scenario that will occur therefore becomes more and more unknown: it now seems to be established that from 2035 onwards, new cars equipped with a heat engine will no longer be able to be registered in Europe, which means that willy-nilly the electric will be the protagonist absolute of the years to come. Also due to these choices imposed by the EU, more and more car manufacturers are concentrating their efforts and resources on the electrification process of the range, and in the event that supply and demand do not find a meeting point, the situation would be all ‘other than favorable for the companies themselves. Numbers in hand, underlines La Stampa on newsstands today, among the motorists of the five main continental markets, the Italian ones they are the most skeptical compared to pure electric vehicles, whose share reaches 8.8%, against 38.2% in Germany, 21.4% in the United Kingdom, 21.2% in France and 9.5% in Spain.
“The sacrosanct environmental targets indicated by the EU require an industrial reconversion quick and efficient. Defending the past does not mean protecting Italy, rather it means consigning our companies to a future without a future – complains Michele Crisci, president of UNRAE – Embracing new technologies by speeding up their adoption starting from those who have the availability to do so, speeding up the reduction of production costs and sales prices at the same time: this is the only way to increase its diffusion for everyone“.
