Electric cars The proliferation of electric cars brought a new phenomenon to the streets of Helsinki – “It is worrying that this is the case”

Electric cars should not be charged through a standard electrical outlet, says the expert. It may be dangerous.

Helsinki in the city center, special tunings are sometimes seen: from inside the house, a cable runs through a car parked on the street.

These are electric cars that residents apparently charge through the stairwell or even the window of their own apartment due to the lack of a charging point.

Also Helen’s e-transport product group manager Päivi Linteri has taken note of the phenomenon.

“I don’t live in Helsinki, but I’ve come across the same in my own place. It is worrying that this is the case, ”says Linteri.

Thus, according to Linter, an electric car should not be charged through a stairwell or any home outlet, but a device designed for an electric car should be used for charging.

First of all, for safety: when using a standard socket, charging can still take place when the cord is unplugged. This is not the case for chargers for electric cars.

The performance of chargers is also generally better than a standard socket. Sockets that are not designed for continuous charging may become hot during use.

Bridge At present, there are about 200 charging points along the streets and in public car parks in Helsinki, all of which are managed by Helen. The most popular are the charging points in the city center. In a densely built-up downtown area, many condominiums do not have their own yards and parking spaces, so they are unable to acquire their own charging stations.

The share of rechargeable cars in the total car fleet is growing rapidly, and according to Linter, there is a shortage of charging places.

“Certainly more public charging points are needed. They are needed by ordinary motorists, but increasingly also by freight cars and taxis, which also need to be recharged during the day.

Helsinki city project manager Mikko Lehtonen says new charging stations are expected this year. The city is organizing a competition to set up 50 charging stations on the streets, parking lots and taxi ranks.

One charging station can have several charging points. In addition to the city center, the new parking stations along the streets are coming to Munkkiniemi and Lauttasaari, for example, mainly in areas where resident parking is available.

Lehtonen says that there is a great need for charging stations in the city center and around it.

“We have received feedback from the townspeople and the problem is being recognized.”

In addition to the public charging points along the streets, electric cars can also be charged at private charging stations, for example in connection with shops. There are also several private parking garages in the downtown area where you can charge your electric car.

According to the Finnish Automotive Information Center, at the end of 2021 there were 22,892 fully electric cars and 77,045 hybrid rechargeable cars.
