The same car, but suddenly cheaper (5,000 euros) thanks to the Belgian EV subsidy.
Yes, car prices are usually a lot lower with our neighbors (Belgium, Germany) than with us in the Netherlands. In the field of electric cars, the difference is a lot smaller, because we do not yet have a BPM. However, with the 2024 prices, an interesting development has emerged between the Dutch and Belgian car prices.
Belgian EV subsidy
This has everything to do with the subsidy on electric cars in Belgium. Our dear neighbors have a subsidy on EVs with a limit of 40,000 euros. Belgians will then receive a 5,000 euro discount on a new car. Our limit is 45,000 euros and a subsidy of 2,500 euros.
What are the car brands doing in Belgium now? They adjust the prices so that the EV is just eligible for a subsidy. Skip the subsidy and you have a much cheaper car compared to the Dutch price.
Big discount for Skoda Enyaq
Example, the Skoda Enyaq 60. That is the entry-level. Costs us 44,990 euros. That price is of course placed in such a way to qualify for a subsidy in the Netherlands. With the subsidy, this Skoda stands out €42,490 on your Dutch driveway.
The same car, but in Belgium. The Skoda Enyaq 60 is listed there for 39,990 euros in the price lists. Hey, that's a coincidence! Exactly 10 euros below the subsidy cap. It is also very coincidental that this was still 6,300 euros more expensive in Belgium at the end of 2023. Since January 1, 2024, the Enyaq has become significantly cheaper in Belgium. Especially with the subsidy on top. The same Skoda stands for the subsidy €34,990 on your Belgian driveway.
Sour for us Dutch, nice for the Belgians. For example, a number of electric cars are 'competitively' priced to stay below 40 grand. For example, an ID.3 in Belgium is available from 39,990 (the same as the Dutch price). That is €34,990 including Belgian subsidy or €37,400 including Dutch subsidy.
Criticism of subsidy policy in the Netherlands
There has already been a lot of criticism about the subsidy story in the Netherlands. Several critics have already said that the 2,500 euro subsidy will not make a big difference. In other European countries, a larger subsidy amount provides a real boost to the purchase of an electric car, such as Belgium in this example.
