Elden Ring has introduced an ‘inconspicuous’ tutorial, not exactly ideal for newcomers to the Souls.
The Souls games of FromSoftware they seem to have a penchant for “holes”. They are everywhere, often hidden deep in caves or on the fringes of boss arenas, and if not surrounded by red bloodstains, they are littered with messages from other players.
It is disconcerting, therefore, that at the beginning of Elden Ring you will find yourself in front of one of these holes. At the same time, at the beginning of the adventure, your gaze will be drawn to a door: clearly it is the right way to go, you will think.
Well, it turns out that that hole is the tutorial of the game. And it’s entirely optional. It is in this hole that you will learn the basics of gameplay.
Many players will likely have gone further, venturing out without having a knowledge of the controls.
Elden Ring is a complicated game and it is all too easy to start off on the wrong foot. Surely many would like to understand the basics of the game before starting the challenge.
this is probably the funniest level design of the year to me pic.twitter.com/HqZ9rAUarV

On the one hand, an optional tutorial means veterans of the Souls won’t need to brush up on the basics again. On the other hand, it could be a problem for newcomers.
Elden Ring has rightfully been celebrated as the most accessible Souls game ever, despite its lack of accessibility features, thanks to its range of combat options and the ability to ride if you get stuck. But this accessibility is hampered when players can easily miss the opportunity to learn the basics from the start.
Perhaps a mandatory – or at least more obviously distinguishable – tutorial would not hurt the game’s opening at all at first. What do you think?
