In the summer of 2019, the Italian international Stephan El Shaarawy moved from AS Roma to the Chinese club Shanghai Shenhua. However, the 28-year-old is now facing an early return to the Eternal City, his contract in Shanghai will be terminated prematurely.
The Chinese paid 16 million euros to AS Roma to sign the “Pharaoh” in the summer of 2019. The striker was actually supposed to play for Shanghai until 2022, but as Transfermarkt China reports, both parties terminated the contract prematurely (via transfermarkt.de).
Thus El Shaarawy is facing a return to the Romans, as the Italian media unanimously announce.
Contract until 2024 – delayed return
El Shaarawy only wanted to leave China last October, but his return to his home country failed shortly before the transfer window closed. Now, however, the 28-time Italian national player is back on the way to the Giallorossi, for whom he played from 2016 to 2019.
According to Gianluca Di Marzio El Shaarawy will sign a new contract with AS Roma until 2024, which will bring him around four million euros a year.
For comparison: In Shanghai, the striker received around 13 million euros per year, after only 19 games for Shenhua, El Shaarawy’s yield can be seen accordingly.
