The Cartagena boat, which won in 2019 in the ORC 2 class, prevails in the ORC 3 category, after some high-level regattas in the waters of Palma
‘El Carmen-Elite Sails’, ship of the
Real Club de Regatas de Cartagena skippered by
Jose Coello, was proclaimed this Saturday
champion of the 39th Copa del Rey, disputed in the bay of Palma. In this way, it revalidates the title it won in 2019, the last year in which this competition was held, which is the most important in Spanish sailing.
Two years ago, yes, the Cartagena boat won the ORC 2 category. This time the ORC 3 class.
After six days of regattas, in which equality between the participants has been maximum,
the cartageneros were the best in the decisive days. Thus, in the final phase they achieved a brilliant result (2-2-1-5-2-2), which distanced them from the next classified, the Italian ‘Scugnizza’ and the Alicante ‘Medilevel’.
‘El Carmen’, who recently won the SM La Reina de Valencia trophy, once again showed its reliability in competition, with
a group of crew members who grow up in the most delicate situations. In the fifth scoring test he began to take off with a second place, to score the victory in the sixth and begin his rise to the leadership from there. He closed the first phase in the second place of the general and
on Friday he already left his title very channeled in Mallorcan waters.
After the victory, José Coello commented that “we have been adjusting the boat in the last two years to be more competitive in this class, but the others have been unexpectedly fast. If we had not been very focused, we would not have succeeded. The key has been that the crew has worked as usual, overcoming if things did not go as expected.
It is the sixth time that we come with this boat to the Copa del Rey and we have never seen it so close. We already won the previous one, but this has been the time that it has cost us the most. You couldn’t breathe, if you lost your mind for a moment they ran over you », explained the Cartagena boss.
The other boat of the Real Club de Regatas de Cartagena that has competed in this edition of the Copa del Rey,
the ‘Nemox’, skippered by José Romero Vázquez, got
a creditable seventh place in his second participation, also of the ORC 3 class, confirming that they are a rival to be reckoned with in the future.
In the Clubswan 42 class, José María Meseguer’s ‘Pez de Abril’ (CN Portmán) was third. And, finally, the Malaga ship ‘Teatro Soho Caixabank’, by Javier Banderas, was proclaimed absolute champion of the Copa del Rey.
