Unemployment is once again the main concern of the inhabitants of the Community together with the crisis in the lagoon
Unemployment is once again the main problem for Murcia, followed by the Mar Menor crisis and its management, according to the Cemop Spring Barometer. The greatest concern of one in four respondents (24.3%) is unemployment, despite the fact that it has accumulated months of almost uninterrupted decline and that it has fallen to levels prior to the 2008 crisis. by the future effects that the international economic context may have on the labor market, plagued by runaway inflation, the energy crisis, and the lack of supplies due to the war in Ukraine and the growing uncertainty.
In fact, if the rise in prices and other factors indicated by those surveyed are added, the elements related to the economic situation worry one in three Murcia. It should be remembered that, according to INE data published last week, precisely a third of the Region’s inhabitants are at risk of social exclusion.
The Mar Menor crisis is the most important concern for 15% of Murcia, almost double that in the previous Barometer. This is another problem that the Region has been dragging for years, but the study reflects an increase in concern because it was carried out in the first week of June, just after a new episode of fish mortality.
The seriousness of the state of the salty lagoon is persistent, but the concern seems to grow as summer approaches, with the return to the beaches and the repetition of cases of hypoxia or anoxia, as has occurred in recent years. In last autumn’s barometer, the Mar Menor also ranked second, very close to unemployment.
In addition, the vast majority of those surveyed (82.2%) consider the measures put in place by the regional government to put an end to the deterioration of the Mar Menor insufficient. The perception is higher among PSOE, Ciudadanos and Unidos Podemos voters. Likewise, 90.2% of those surveyed agree that the companies responsible for discharges into the salty lagoon contribute financially to the regeneration of the Mar Menor.
The survey includes another section with the main challenges for the regional government. The Mar Menor climbs to first place. The answers, yes, change according to the voting intention of the respondents. For supporters of PP and Podemos, employment is the main challenge (22.9% and 28.1%, respectively). PSOE voters point to health (slightly above the Mar Menor), while both Vox and Ciudadanos choose the lagoon.
political disaffection
Further from these problems are the rest that the Cemop Spring Barometer collects. It is striking that the political climate, which was placed first in winter, now falls to third and only concerns one in ten respondents. The fieldwork was then done after the PP crisis that ended with Pablo Casado and Teodoro García Egea. This edition, on the other hand, was prepared after the election of Núñez Feijóo, although before the Andalusian elections.
Other concerns of Murcia are water, the regional government and the health system. This response, however, is not linked to the Covid pandemic, which the population considers practically over, but to the lack of resources in Primary Care.
On the other hand, Cemop asks citizens if they think that the display of protest banners and flags, on issues such as gender equality or the rights of LGTBI people, should be prohibited. Conservative party voters express their outright opposition to the display of these symbols in public spaces, while progressive voters support it. Cemop warns of the “strong polarization” on this issue.
