When the veils of the new bikes were removed MV Agusta dedicated to the brand new Lucky Explorer Project, there was really emotion. Because, it must be admitted, there was really a lot of curiosity in discovering what was behind this further opportunity to bring the Italian brand back up through a new ambitious project.
Two bikes have therefore emerged that are perfectly suited to the dunes, to adventure, and to customers who choose to travel without having to submit to specific deadlines. They were called 5.5 and 9.5, name related to the displacement obtained. As MV Agusta says, “are two models that represent the contemporary interpretation of the myth of the great desert races, which since the mid-1980s have marked the imagination of motorcycle sport, establishing themselves among enthusiasts“. The liveries chosen, as can be seen from the images, are a clear tribute to the heritage of the Elefant.
Project 9.5 is the synthesis of a design and development work, which was also attended by the legend Edi Orioli, which for many months has been aimed at creating a bike that is unique in terms of riding, ease of approach, performance and charm. Lat 9.5 it is blatantly offroad in terms of chassis, starting from the pair of wheel diameters: 21 “for the front wheel and 18” for the rear wheel, and a wheelbase of 1,580 mm. It fits into the Adventure Premium category, and is based on the new MV Agusta 950 engine – derived from the 800 three-cylinder in-line one. In this sense, numerous technical choices have been confirmed: the head plane does not undergo variations in position, such as the angle of the cylinders; the position of the motor mounts on the three axles and of the pinion are identical.
The four-stroke engine, with double overhead camshaft and liquid cooling, boasts a compression ratio of 12.5: 1; the crankshaft is counter-rotating to improve driving dynamics and reduce inertia. The removable gearbox is also offered in an unprecedented electro-actuated configuration, specially designed for this model. The maximum power and torque values are respectively 123 hp at 10,000 rpm and 102 Nm at 7,000 rpm. The specific power is equal to 132.25 hp / liter. The complete mass of the engine is only 57 kg.
The transmission can count on a new primary transmission gear with straight teeth, with power take-off from the countershaft; the gears of the pump control are unprecedented. The base has been completely redesigned: has integrated oil passages, while the passage of water from the upper to the lower base occurs through an external aluminum pipe. The clutch, generator, starter, selector and gearbox covers have been redesigned. The radiator is faired laterally, with a panel that reveals a semicircle element in the central part. To protect the front braking system there is a disc cover, extended and with large windows to guarantee the discs the air flow necessary for cooling.
The instrumentation of the 9.5 was developed on automotive standards. It has a 7 ”color TFT panel, with Bluetooth connection to smartphones and Wi-Fi for updating. The electrical blocks have been specially designed for this model: inspired by functionality and ergonomics criteria, they allow you to move between the configuration and customization menus. The bag fixing system is retractable, placed in the tail: a precise choice to keep the design clean. The frame is made of steel, with a closed double cradle structure. Looking for a good balance between road and offroad, it is composed of forged and extruded elements, based on the loads required at different points. Despite the excellent torsional strength and longitudinal stiffness values, it stops the scales on a very low weight. The swingarm uses a lightweight aluminum alloy to achieve the highest strength-to-weight ratio.
The 5.5, developed with partner QJ, is an average that nevertheless obtains the appearance of a higher displacement motorcycle. Equipped with a two-cylinder in-line engine with double overhead camshaft distribution and liquid cooling, it has been the subject of careful refinement work, aimed at further improving its already high efficiency. The increase in displacement up to 550 cc (70.5 mm bore and 71 mm stroke) was made exclusively for this model and is determined by the desire to further strengthen the torque curve, in order to guarantee full and uniform delivery at all speeds.
