Egypt has reiterated its emphasis on the constants and determinants of any ceasefire agreement in Gaza, most notably the categorical rejection of the Israeli presence in the “Philadelphi Corridor” and the Rafah crossing, south of the Gaza Strip.
Egyptian media quoted a high-ranking Egyptian source yesterday as saying: “The continuation of the current war and the possibility of its regional expansion is extremely dangerous and portends dire consequences at all levels.”
The source stressed that the Israeli government is responsible for not reaching a truce agreement, noting that it is seeking to impose a new reality on the ground to cover up its internal crisis.
In another context, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and his New Zealand counterpart Christopher Luxon said yesterday that they are united in calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and finding a two-state solution between Israel and Palestine.
“We are very united in calling for an immediate ceasefire, bringing the parties to the negotiating table and finding a two-state solution,” Luxon added at a joint press conference.
Anwar said the prospects for a ceasefire do not look encouraging at the present time, pointing to “the lack of commitment from countries, especially the United States, that can exercise their influence to stop the conflict.”
