Yesterday, Egypt and France affirmed the pivotal role of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) in providing support to the people of the Gaza Strip, especially in light of the catastrophic humanitarian conditions that require the support of all international mechanisms working in the relief field.
The official spokesman for the Egyptian presidency, Counselor Ahmed Fahmy, said in a statement that this came during President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi’s meeting with French Foreign Minister Stephane Ségournet in Cairo. He added that the meeting's discussions focused on the situation in Gaza, where they reviewed the intensified Egyptian efforts with various partners to stop the fire and implement humanitarian aid, with the aim of ending the humanitarian tragedy for the people of the Strip, in addition to stressing the need for the international community to assume its responsibilities towards implementing the relevant international resolutions.
He pointed out that the two sides also stressed their absolute rejection of any measures or policies aimed at displacing Palestinians from their lands.
For his part, Minister Ségournet stressed France's keenness to coordinate visions and efforts with Egypt towards a sustainable ceasefire and prisoner exchange in light of the agreement of the two countries' positions on the necessity of preventing the circle of conflict from expanding and activating the two-state solution as a basis for a comprehensive settlement of the Palestinian issue and restoring security and stability in the Middle East.
In this context, Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry said during a press conference in the capital, Cairo, with his French counterpart yesterday: “We stressed the importance of the ceasefire in Gaza and the entry of aid into the Strip.”
He added: “We affirm Egypt’s rejection of the forced displacement of Palestinians from the Gaza Strip. The Palestinian issue must be dealt with through a comprehensive political framework, and a time frame must be set for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.”
For his part, Sigournet said: “We stress the necessity of a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip,” adding: “We are concerned about the increase in tensions in the Red Sea region,” stressing that his country rejects any displacement of the population of the Strip, stressing that the Strip must be part of the state. The next Palestinian.
In a related context, White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said yesterday that humanitarian issues in Gaza will be a top priority for US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken during his current visit to the Middle East.
He added in press statements: “Reaching an agreement with the Palestinian movement to release the remaining hostages during a humanitarian truce is in the interest of the United States.”
