Riedel’s victory represented a turning point in relation to the result of the 1st round. At the end of the 1st stage of the election, Capitão Contar was ahead with 26.71% of the valid votes. However, with a campaign focused on presenting government proposals, holding rallies and allying with the image of the former Agriculture Minister and elected senator, Teresa Cristina (PP), Eduardo Riedel managed to win the dispute for MS.
CAMPAIGN IN MS
During the campaign of 2nd round by the government of Mato Grosso do Sul, Eduardo Riedel had as his main opponent the fellow bolsonarista, Capitão Contar. Although the 2 opponents support and use the image of Jair Bolsonaro (PL), Riedel scaled back the campaign for him after the president asked for votes live in the presidential debate of Globe on September 29 to his opponent, Captain Contar. Contar, on the other hand, continued to make a stand for Bolsonaro.
The declaration came into conflict with the alliance forged with the former Minister of Agriculture and senator-elect Teresa Cristina (PP) around Eduardo Riedel, whose coalition also includes the PL, Bolsonaro’s party. Shortly afterwards, on October 5, Senator posted on your Instagram a statement in which the president says he is neutral in the disputed in MS and says he hopes that the population “choose the best to represent them”.
“It is a state where there will be a 2nd round and the 2 candidates support us. And, therefore, out of a duty of loyalty and, as good political teaching says, we will remain neutral in Mato Grosso do Sul”he said.
