Young people’s faith in the future has strengthened, but especially young women’s cynicism and concern about the future has increased. The concerns of young people must be taken seriously.
Finns young people and young adults believe in their own future but are widely concerned about the world’s problems. The fresh one tells about the strengthening of faith in the future statementaccording to which two thirds of 16-30-year-olds estimate that their talents and skills are good for working in the future.
The strengthening of faith in the future is a good message, because there has been a lot of talk about the lack of prospects among young people. Young people’s confidence in a good future helps both in the renewal of society, in managing things and in ordinary everyday life.
It is dangerous if young people’s concern about the future turns into cynicism and bitterness. It also affects the kind of society they build.
The report commissioned by the Foundation for Children and Youth shows that a large part of young people can adapt to various social changes very quickly.
Of course, the world situation is reflected in the mood. Concerns about climate change, the coronavirus pandemic and the war of aggression launched by Russia in Ukraine have increased uncertainty.
Worldwide when it comes to problems, however, young people are not very confident. More and more people doubt humanity’s desire and ability to solve the biggest global problems. The fear of war has become the most prominent in the minds of young people.
It is worrying that, although the vast majority are confident about their future, the cynicism of young women has increased. Women also see the future of the world as clearly more frightening and uncertain than men. In addition, about a fifth of young people have a very cynical attitude towards both their own and the world’s future.
The confidence of young people increases faith in the future. On the other hand, lack of perspective and pessimism increase if young people feel that they are left out of decision-making and think that their concerns are not taken seriously. Young people must also have room to dream and dream.
