Editorial The statue leaves at just the right time

It was decided to move the World Peace Statue from Hakaniemenranta. There is no rush to return.

Helsinki the city announced early in the week that it would move World peace statue from Hakaniemenranta to shelter from under construction work. The reason is the construction site of the Kruunusillat tramway and the renovation of Hakaniemenranta.

The six-meter statue is a gift from the city of Moscow to Helsinki in 1990. The pompous work representing the communist conception of art has aroused strong emotions throughout its existence. It has been blunted and even attempted. The council has also discussed moving the work out of sight.

Now the transfer of the statue coincided with a delicate moment after Russia invaded Ukraine. Many have already suggested that the statue end up in a landfill. However, art is always a product of its time, and the world is not improved by pouring statues.

However, Helsinki could consider whether, for example, a museum would be a more suitable place for a work. There is no need to hurry with the restoration of the statue.
