Editorial The barometer between Niinistö and Marin vibrated

The dispute between President Sauli Niinistö and Prime Minister Sanna Marini was not about Finland’s position on the arrest of Alexei Navalny, but about who would state Finland’s position.

Finland the system of governing foreign policy was reformed more than 20 years ago with the entry into force of the new constitution. According to Article 93 thereof, Finland’s foreign policy is managed by the President of the Republic in co-operation with the Government. The Constitution also confirmed the division of powers that had already been used in the past that Finland’s EU policy is entirely governed by the Government.
