Editorial|The project intended to improve the internet connections of Finnish trains could be summed up as indolence supported by stiffness, impatience and lack of cooperation. And the end result was a mistake.
Jif something used to work brilliantly, it “worked like a train toilet”. The expression could be updated. If something doesn’t work at all, it works like a train’s internet.
The Ministry of Transport decided to stop the project, which was supposed to improve the internet connections of trains. They are extremely bad in some places in Finland. Transport Minister Lulu Ranne (ps) justified the solution by saying, among other things, that there is not enough money for such projects. In Ranteen’s opinion, the period of use of the allocated funds for the project ran out.
The reasoning is strange. At the same time as the government is planning an unnecessary multi-billion-euro train connection to Turku, five million is not released to improve the internet. If you were to ask train passengers, the choice would be clear for many: they would rather have a good network connection that facilitates work and leisure time during the trip than save a few minutes in travel time.
Even referring to time doesn’t really work. Improvements to internet connections have been planned year after year, but with few results. Civil service preparation has been slow and involuntary, VR’s operation has been rigid and politics has been unmotivated. The previous Minister of Transport, Timo Harakka (sd), raised the issue, but did not hesitate. The current minister showed his zeal by ending the project.
The operators were left waiting for VR and the state to move forward. According to the operators, it is not possible to build more capacity in remote regions under market conditions, which is why the state should come in.
Lin my opinion, the reform would not be so big that it would have to be carried out for years. The biggest problem is that the signal does not reach the train carriages easily enough. In many European countries, the windows of the trains have grooved antennas to help. VR initially dismissed the idea, then warmed to it.
The project intended to improve the internet connections of trains could be summed up in such a way that indolence was supported by stiffness, impatience and inability to cooperate. And the end result was a mistake.
