Editorial A new magnificent beach route is planned for the center of Helsinki

The four finalists in the magazine beach design competition take into account the requirements of the iconic environment quite well.

South Harbor The warehouse beach is one of the most valuable places in Helsinki. The area now has port facilities and terminal buildings. Possibly in five years’ time, the area will be of new use to the townspeople and also to tourists.

The design competition for the area has now progressed to the stage where four of the nine competition proposals have been selected to the finals. The jury will select the winner from these in the late fall. The proposals were commented on on the Tell Your Position service earlier this year.

They reached the finals advances Ahti, Boardwalk, Warehouse Promenade and Islands. Ahti received praise from the jury for, among other things, the Baltic Sea theme and the Boardwalk’s sculptural architecture. According to the jury, the magazine promenade acts as a “harmonious continuum of a valuable cultural environment”. The islands, on the other hand, are “balanced and holistic”.

The buildings must be compatible with both the empire houses of the Esplanade and the valuable parks nearby. The iconic and historical nature of the environment has been taken into account quite well in the proposals. Tähtitorninmäki will continue to show both the sea and the skyline of the Cathedral.

About the finalists none offer a large building mass, but several smaller buildings are included in the proposals. Of particular interest is what is left between and around the buildings. A wonderful beach route from Kauppatori to Kaivopuisto is opening for walkers and cyclists. At the same time, there will be cafés, restaurants and various cultural facilities on Makasiiniranta, which will tempt you to stop.

The Museum of Architecture and Design is also coming to the area, where its own design competition will be held. The ships will leave the South Harbor when Tallinn traffic is concentrated in the West Harbor and Swedish ships to Katajanokka. In this way, the maritime façade of Helsinki’s city center will have a new look.
