After a six-hour journey with stops for the public to admire, from Balmoral Castle, where Elizabeth II died last Thursday (8), the queen’s coffin arrived in Scotland’s capital, Edinburgh. A week of farewells begins with a procession guided by King Charles III this Monday (12).
The queen’s body lies in Holyrood Palace, where Elizabeth used to spend her early summer. In the early afternoon, the coffin will be taken to the Cathedral of Sant’Egidio, where it will stay for 24 hours.
A religious ceremony will be held in the cathedral. The solid gold crown of Scotland will be placed on the coffin, as foreseen in the plan of events following the monarch’s death.
Then Charles III is expected to receive Scottish Prime Minister Nicola Sturgeon for an official meeting. In the early evening, the royal family will begin a wake.
On Tuesday (13), the queen’s body will be flown to London, where it will stay for another 24 hours. You will then be taken to Westminster Castle for another five-day wake, where authorities from different parts of the world are expected.
