At the stand MV Agusta in that of EICMA 2021 there was a cumbersome presence: that of Edi Orioli. Born in Udine on 5 December 1962, he can boast the victory of four editions of the Dakar moto (1988, 1990, 1994 and 1996). Part of this great sporting history was written with the Cagiva brand, and with the Elefant model. Mythical bikes, whose reliability and speed have given Orioli the chance to always fight at great levels in the great and dangerous African raid.
After hanging up his helmet, Orioli has dedicated himself to entrepreneurship in a sector that is really far from the sports one. With his company, Pratic, produces and sells awnings, pergolas, furnishing accessories. However, we cannot deny a past made up of great racing and emotions, experienced on dual-sport bikes, or if we want ‘adventure’. whose spirit today wants to be ridden by the Lucky Explorer Project launched by MV Agusta. Orioli is its testimonial: this is what he said to the microphones of FormulaPassion.
“I left the world of motorcycles, and my business takes a lot of effort. But how could I say no to a request like MV Agusta’s? Lending a hand as a testimonial, having offered some ideas made me really happy. As far as I can give, of course: I have raced with this type of bike, but running them on the street is another matter. For example, today the dimensions are different from the past, just look at the bikes I raced with“, Explained Edi.
Then he added: “It was a great idea to re-propose the colors and the type of motorcycles of the Dakar, relying on a historic brand for racing.. The livery absolutely recalls the atmosphere of those times. Then obviously the sales will determine who is right, but I really believe in this initiative by MV: the tests continue, we will see them on the road shortly“.
We asked, then, if such a bike can really make a comeback, which mixes off-road and road, with a pinch of sport. Here is Orioli’s answer. “At the time, if you didn’t have a motorcycle with at least 20 liters of tank you were a loser. You had to buy a Yamaha SuperTéneré, a Cagiva or a BMW GS to keep up. That was the greatest moment for this type of bike. However that passion is returning, the desire to explore, to take long journeys is returning. And these are the bikes that are most suitable. I believe that fashions are back, and in fact there is a rediscovery of enduro, off-road, classic and modern enduro. I believe it is the right time to sink the sword, thinking about the Lucky Explorer project“.
