Ecuadorian President Guillermo Lasso discussed with China’s dictator Xi Jinping the South American country’s desire to join the UN Security Council this year, as confirmed on Saturday by the Ecuadorian Foreign Minister Juan Carlos Holguín. .

In a remote press conference, the chancellor said, without giving further details, that Lasso expressed the nation’s desire to present, in the Security Council, “the values ​​that Ecuador has for world peace, for human rights” and that the country “will also play a fundamental role in what the world is going through”.

Xi Jinping, according to Holguín, would have been satisfied with the South American country’s interest in joining the group at the United Nations and that it is willing to “seek the greatest amount of support to achieve this goal”.

On June 11, 2021, Ambassador Cristian Espinosa announced, at the UN General Assembly, Ecuador’s candidacy to join the Security Council from 2023 to 2024, in elections that will take place in June this year.

Lasso met with Xi Jinping today and will return to Ecuadorian territory tomorrow, with an expected arrival on Monday.
