The Ecuadorian Government has responded to the condemnation of the Organization of American States (OAS) regarding their raid on the Mexican Embassy in Quito on April 5.
Ecuador flatly rejected the censorship of the OAE, however, showed willingness to rebuild diplomatic relations with Mexicowhich were broken a few hours after the violent act where the former vice president, Jorge Glas, was arrested.
The Ecuadorian Foreign Ministry based its vote against alleging violations of international rights also committed by Mexicowho defended and provided political asylum to the former Ecuadorian vice president.
Violation of the Vienna Convention
The controversy arose when Ecuador broke into the Mexican diplomatic headquarters to arrest former vice president Jorge Glaswhich was denounced as a violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.
During a session of the OAS Permanent Council, the condemning resolution was approved with 29 votes in favor, 1 against and 1 abstention, recognizing the positions of both countries involved.
The Ecuadorian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Gabriela Sommerfeld, defended the OAS resolution as “fair” and highlighted Ecuador's willingness to dialogue with Mexico and enforce its version of events.
The Government of Ecuador has reiterated its commitment to constructively dialogue with Mexico to overcome this diplomatic impasse and reestablish a relationship of mutual trust. However, Mexico has not given a response in this regard.
