The Ecuadorian government arrives at this weekend’s elections with a permanent tension in its bilateral relationship with Mexico. And it is that the administration of Daniel Noboa has been confronted both with the governments of Andrés Manuel López Obrador and with … Claudia Sheinbaum’s current.
In April 2024, Ecuadorian security forces broke into the Mexican embassy in Quito to extract the former vice president of the South American country, Jorge Glas, whom the Noboa administration sought to judge for corruption causes. López Obrador, as happened in similar cases in Bolivia and Peru, wanted to have aslar for Glas when considering him a persecuted politician.
Finally, Ecuador broke into the embassy and Glas ended up detained. Mexico, in turn, protested strongly because of the treatment of its diplomats settled in Quito and broke diplomatic relations with the Noboa government.
Both countries also have an underground agenda linked to the world of security and drug trafficking that also generates friction: the main Ecuadorian narco group, called Los Lobos, has a direct relationship with the Mexican narco, especially with the Sinaloa cartel, criminal organization to the Which various American morning have linked to López Obrador’s family.
Last week Noboa, in a clear gesture of alignment with Trump, decided to impose tariffs on trade with Mexico. It is a general tax of 27% to Mexican products.
Through a message on social networks, Noboa said: «We ratify our position of signing a free trade agreement with Mexico. But, until that happens and is a reality, we will apply a 27% tariff to the products we import, with the aim of promoting our industry and that there is just our producers.
