The economic recovery after the pandemic, the global challenges and the inclusion of Myanmar, mark the virtual summit of the leaders of Southeast Asia. We tell you some details of the meeting.
A summit with diplomatic weight. The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and Japan assured that the bloc is committed to collaboration on health, security and trade.
Likewise, the association addressed the relationship with Australia, chaired by the Thai Prime Minister, Prayut Chan-o-cha, who opted to strengthen economic ties.
The Thai leader advocated for the free trade agreement between ASEAN, Australia and New Zealand to be modernized soon and be complementary to the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership.
The meeting includes the United States, China, India, Russia, Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand. US President Joe Biden and Chinese Prime Minister Li Keqiang joined in the annual summit of Asia-Pacific countries, a region where world powers dispute trade issues, democracy, human rights and the Taiwan question.
For his part, Biden announced a contribution of 100 million dollars against the growth of China as an economic adversary. The US president described his country’s relationship with the bloc as “essential.” “I want all of you to hear directly from me the importance that the United States attaches to its relationship with ASEAN,” Biden said, adding that “you can look forward to seeing me show up and reach out to you.”
The great absentee from the summit was Myanmar. The bloc said that the military junta has made “insufficient” progress in implementing the agreements reached. Human rights activists called on ASEAN to establish a dialogue with the so-called Government of National Unity, made up of pro-democracy politicians and activists.
🧵 As @ASEAN leaders meet, it’s important to note that member states have their own biz interests w / the terrorist #Myanmar military junta & its conglomerates.
