Nfter the corona restrictions were lifted, Frankfurt am Main and Vienna have once again moved up significantly in a ranking of the most livable cities in the world. In this year’s index of the British “Economist” group, which was published on Thursday, Austria’s capital Vienna regained the top spot for the first time since the pandemic began. Frankfurt came in 7th this time and, along with Hamburg and Düsseldorf, is one of the biggest winners in a year-on-year comparison. The three German cities each improved by around 30 places, Vienna by 11.
Last year, the quality of life in European metropolises fell significantly due to the Corona crisis, while the largely normal life in isolated New Zealand brought Auckland first place. With the lifting of the corona measures, metropolises in New Zealand, Australia and China slipped again in 2022.
According to the report, “well vaccinated” cities in Europe and Canada are once again dominating the top spots: Vienna is followed by Copenhagen, Zurich, Calgary, Vancouver and Geneva. After Frankfurt, the top ten also includes Toronto and Amsterdam, as well as Osaka and Melbourne.
Among other things, the analysts evaluate the factor “stability”, which is why Moscow and St. Petersburg have lost a lot of quality of life as a result of the Russian attack on Ukraine. Kyiv was taken out of the ranking this year.
