In the last few years Lewis Hamilton and the Mercedes together they rewrote the history of Formula 1. The Englishman won six of his seven career titles thanks to the single-seaters built by the Brackley team; the silver arrows on the other hand have returned to winning after decades of absence from the Circus thanks to the exploits of the # 44, which dragged the team to the record row of eight consecutive constructors’ titles. In the tenth season faced together by the two sides, however, it would be emerging – for the first time since 2016 – some cracks in the partnership. To launch this hypothesis, which could open to quite sensational scenarios in the drivers market, was the former Circus boss Bernie Ecclestone.
According to the British manager, in fact, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff would be starting to “Get bored” of Hamilton’s behavior, appeared in this start to the season not only less competitive than the young new boxing mate, George Russell, but also ‘hungry’ compared to the past. “I didn’t think that [Russell] he was that good, but he did a great job – Ecclestone declared in an interview with Daily Mail – I’m surprised. Or maybe Lewis did a bad job? I would say both. Toto is a little fed up with Lewis. I don’t think he’s really trying. Let’s put it another way: Lewis doesn’t seem worried about losing“.
Hamilton has a contract that binds him to Mercedes until the end of the 2023 season, but if the motivation of the seven-time world champion were to drop, according to Ecclestone Wolff he could resort to one of his “spells” to free the # 44 seat. “Lewis could ‘sell’ his position to Toto – speculated the former F1 CEO – might say something like this: ‘this is what I take, I withdraw and receive half of what I would take‘. Toto could do one of his magic, offering someone else less money and thus keeping £ 20 million“. Reasoning that for the moment seems to be just a fictional market. Certainly though, if Russell continues to beat Hamilton until the end of the season, some questions among the top of the Mercedes team could start to arise.
