Eastern border | Traffic on the eastern border picked up after the end of travel restrictions – more than 6,000 people crossed the border on Friday

For example, expired visas and currency exchange restrict travel.

Transport the eastern border has become more lively after the travel restrictions imposed by Russia were removed yesterday, according to the command center of the Border Guard of Southeastern Finland. However, congestion has not arisen, but border traffic is characterized as sloppy.

The restrictions were lifted on Friday afternoon. During Friday, a total of 6,275 people crossed the border in both directions at the Imatra, Nuijamaa and Vaalimaa border crossing points.

On Thursday, July 14, when travel restrictions were still in effect, 4,835 people crossed the border. The increase in the number of people who crossed the border after the removal of the restrictions was therefore about a third.

The management center estimates that there may be around 7,000 passengers during Saturday.

To Finland there have been somewhat more arrivals than those going to Russia. For example, between 15:00 on Friday and 15:00 on Saturday, about 4,000 people came to Finland and about 3,500 people left Finland.

Some Russians have further connections from Finland, which increases the number of arrivals.

Increases in passenger numbers are still moderate. Back in 2019, before the corona restrictions, around 20,000 people crossed the border per day in mid-July.

According to the border guard, traveling after the corona break is at least hindered by the fact that many people’s visas or passports have expired. Similarly, for example, there may be difficulties in exchanging rubles for euros.
